Turn Your Skin Into a Touchscreen

So, I don’t normally talk about crowdsourcing projects on here, mainly because in the tech industry they are scams a majority of the time (and this might not be an exception). Generally, the ones that aren’t scams never perform as advertised and are frequently beset by setbacks in production, etc. But, all of that aside, this is so cool I just had to share with everyone. There is, of course, a huge catch, but we’ll get to that in a minute. A company called Cicret (pronounced “secret”) is looking for donations to fund the production of a cool new wearable bracelet that will turn your wrist into a smartphone screen. With a flick of your wrist, this nifty bracelet will project a screen onto your skin, which you can then interact with using your free hand in the exact same manner that you would with an actual smartphone. The device will pair with your smartphone remotely and (in theory) will be able to control and do pretty much anything that you could if you were holding your smartphone. It is literally a portable screen. Here’s a video from the developer showing how the product would work: But, here’s the catch: they don’t have the prototype finished yet. All of the images in the video, as cool as they look, are computer-generated ideas of what it could actually look like. It makes me a little hesitant, personally, as it almost seems too good to be true and since they are looking for the funding on their own instead of going through something like Kickstarter, that might mean that you’ll be throwing your money away. Granted, there are some devices already on the market that use similar technology, so in theory I suspect it is possible, but I don’t know enough to say for sure. There is a really good chance this isn’t real, but man… it should be! The upside is that the company does have an option to donate a single euro (which is around $1) so you could potentially donate simply to show support and not be out a ton of money. I might actually recommend that, if you’re considering donating at all. Preorders are not available yet, and Cicret’s website states that they have around 3,000 supporters and are at around 15% of their $1.2 million goal. So what do you think? Is it a scam? Is it legit? Would you use something like this? Let me know in the comments!]]>
