TracFone Cuts Data Prices

Data is undoubtedly the most expensive part of any phone plan and, of course, it’s also the one that most people want. In the prepaid market especially, it’s nothing to see rates as high as $0.10 per MB (which translates to more than $100 per GB) when using any kind of bucket or pay-as-you-go prepaid plan. But, if you’re not a huge fan of the monthly unlimited option for data, then TracFone might be worth a second look.

New data prices showed up on TracFone’s refill site recently with data prices that are insanely low: around $0.01 per MB or roughly $12.50 per GB. Compare that to the $100 that other companies are paying, and I don’t think I need to explain any further.

Here are data top-up options that TracFone is currently offering on its website and in Walmart stores:

  • $10 – 300 MB
  • $20 – 750 MB
  • $30 – 2 GB (was $50)
  • $50 – 4 GB (new)

All of these cards have rollover, which means that as long as your account stays active, the data will continue to roll forward until it’s used up. Most TracFone top-ups are only good for 90 days, so you’ll have to purchase a new top-up before it expires to keep the line active. There are a couple top-ups that are good for a year as well.

With select phones that use AT&T as well as Verizon towers, TracFone’s new data pricing is pretty sweet, especially if you’re a light user who doesn’t really need all that much data. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of TracFone as a company, but with data rates like that, I wouldn’t blame you if you decided to jump ship and try it out. TracFone does allow customers to BYOD as well.
