Simple Mobile Doubles Data for December

Simple Mobile, a Tracfone MVNO that uses T-Mobile’s network, has launched a new plan for customers activating a new line in the month of December. With this promotion, all customers who activate service with a $40, $50 or $55 plan on or before December 31, 2016 will receive double the data for one month. After the promotion has ended, data will lower back to the usual rate. Here is what the plans look like without the doubled data:
  • $40 plan – Unlimited talk and text, 4 GB data
  • $50 plan – Unlimited talk and text, 5 GB data
  • $55 plan – Unlimited talk and text, 10 GB data
On all of the above plans, unlimited lower speed data is offered once the high speed has been used, but it is throttled to 64 kbps, making it virtually unusable. It’s worth noting that the company also features a $60 plan with unlimited talk, text, and high speed data (although I imagine that it is eventually throttled as is custom). That plan is not compatible with this offer, obviously. There is also a $25 plan which features no data. All plans are eligible for a discount when customers sign up for autopay. Check out plans here. While getting 20 GB of data for $55 is a steal, the fact that this bonus is only good for the month that you sign up may discourage users from porting over to the carrier as Tracfone companies tend to have a pretty bad reputation. Still, if you don’t mind the hassle, porting over for a month might be nice just to get the bonus, then you could port away. The company does allow BYOD for unlocked GSM phones.
