Samsung Creates Smartphone for Tony Stark

So, I admit it: I love the Avengers movie franchise, and judging by the box office sales, I’m not alone. There’s just something so fun and dynamic about it; I can’t help but love the stories and the tech is way cool. So when I heard that Samsung actually made a real phone that for the new Avengers movie, I just had to do a quick post. I mean, superheroes and cool gadgets: what more could you ask for? From what reports indicate, Samsung has pretty much taken over Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the upcoming movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, and will feature not only Samsung smartwatches but a super cool custom see-through smartphone made for the billionare Tony Stark. The device was designed exclusively for Ironman and unlike most see-through screen tech (which is often created using a glass prop and CGI technology, as seen above in this Ironman 2 screenshot) this phone is actually billed as a ‘working model.’  Unfortunately for Ironman fans, the phone is unlikely to actually make the jump to the general public, although Samsung is known for making unusual phones so we might just see a perfected model in the years to come. Who knows?  As far as the Avengers prototype goes, I haven’t been able to find any pictures of the phone, but the device was described in Comic Book’s article earlier this month:
What type of phone does a man who has everything need? A sleek and metallic phone that features cutting edge technology designed specifically for Tony Stark. With a striking flexible display, the phone features two different curved panels, taking inspiration from Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge so that important information is displayed separately from the main screen. The device features a hologram glass user interface with finger print security so that even if the device gets into the wrong hands, Tony Stark’s personal data stays secure and out of the hands of the enemy.
While it does sound pretty fancy and futuristic, I can’t help but wonder how useful such a phone would actually be. I mean, Tony Stark is far from the first character Hollywood has given a see-through screen, but how useful would they really be? From what I can see, there are three main obstacles to a real phone with a see-through screen: security, usability and durability. The first issue is obviously security. While companies could put all kinds of fingerprint scanners and such on their devices, the issue is that the screen is see through–anyone standing close enough could see every swipe and button you press. Now for my personal use, that wouldn’t matter so much. If you want to see pictures of my cat, my pins on Pinterest and read the jokes I send to my friend Joe: knock yourself out. But not everyone shares that mentality, I am sure. Visibility is obviously another issue as well. I question how well you’d actually be able to see what was on your screen if it was see-through. The display would have to be extremely bright, and even then I would think that a screen like that would be more distracting than cool. And, of course, durability has to come into play. I mean, with current smartphones, we have all kinds of super protective cases to keep our phones safe from our own clumsiness–but how do you protect a phone with a clear screen? Putting a normal case on the device would make it not cool at all, but carrying around a piece of glass just seems like asking for it to break. I am sure I’d drop it within the first five minutes and that would be that. Regardless, the device does look pretty snazzy, and I can’t say that I wouldn’t feel pretty awesome with a super futuristic phone like this in my purse. But  what do you think? Would you use a see-through phone? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!]]>
