Virgin Mobile’s new phone: Kyocera X-tc
posted by Joe on February 5th, 2009 - 11:00 am | Virgin Mobile

That there is the Kyocera X-tc, which made its way to Virgin Mobile’s website today (h/t Phone Scoop). It’s a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and a big screen, measuring 240×320. Other features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Web browser, and media player. Best of all is the price, just $100. It has its own page, but is not listed with the other phones, and it doesn’t appear for sale yet. We’ll drop word when it does.

I heard that VirginMobileUSA.com will be selling it on their website starting on April 6th. I don’t think they would send it out to the stores first before sending selling it at there OWN website. I’m getting this the day it comes out.[: I have the wildcard and (no offense) but sucks../= So, I’l looking for a better phone. And this is the one I want.[:

I have received the phone. Considering the price, it’s a great phone overall. The sound that comes through on the phone is rather clear, though both my fiance and I both notice a tad of static (we both got the phone). It also seems the antenna isn’t as strong as other phones. The speaker on the phone is LOUD, which is great. The keys feel a bit cramped, but I’m getting used to it quickly and don’t think I’ll have anything to complain about in this regard within a week. It’s just a matter of getting used to it….
But I do have a huge qualm. And so does my fiance. And do does the several other people I know who have been waiting for this phone…
There’s a “Media Player” on the phone. And despite the fact that it’s called a “media player” which at the very least tells everyone that the phone would play video (along with music, much like Windows Media Player) and the fact that the icon next to “Media Player” in the feature set for the phone on this website is a FILMSTRIP, the phone DOES NOT have a video player. I contacted Virgin Mobile about this after receiving the phone and they said “X-tc phone does not support…video player features ” …their email response also sayus it has no ability to record videos either.
I wish Virgin Mobile would make this more clear on its website and RENAME the application from MEDIA PLAYER to something else (like MUSIC PLAYER?). Virgin is very big on having great customer support and this is pure marketing deception. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, I know who has/had been looking forward to this phone had been under the impression that the phone would be able to play videos, but it cannot.
The marketing on this feature is unfortunate. Along with the QWERTY keybad, this was the other big feature everyone I know (and I know at least two dozen people who use Virgin and waiting for a QWERTY phone) was looking forward to.
I know it’s asking for a lot to have something that could play (H.264?) video smoothly on a phone this cheap, but how they market the phone is not our problem.

Errr; Sorry, the FILMSTRIP icon is on Virgin Mobile’s website….not this one…wrote a similar statement on Virgin’s site, but doubt they will ever approve it.

I got mine yesterday. It looks good, feels solid. I love the screen, but hate the keyboard. I have large hands, The keyboard is a deal breaker.
I took it to best buy to compare the screen size to the shuttle, The shuttle screen is small. Camera does not have a flash. The other features will make this a good phone.
Note to Virgin Mobile and Kyocera. People who buy Qwerty Phones want large screens with a large keyboard.
I can not get past how the small keyboard. I’m going back to my wildcard.

Makes the Wild Card look and feel like a toy for a kid. Better the one big screen than the two small on that one. At least photos come through bigger than actual thumbnails, and can be viewed full-size on Facebook and other networking sites. I The slider feels solid. If you’re accustomed to using a small keyboard like a Palm, you should have no problem. After many problems surfing the Web with the Wild Card (or trying to) with much frustration, the X-TC is a welcome breath of fresh air. The on-board Web browser is much improved. For a faster experience, albeit giving up some font size, you can download Opera Mini. I would recommend doing it directly from the Opera web site instead of Virgin Mobile’s, using the direct method. Since the phone is so recently added, not all the X-TC applications are on Virgin’s site yet.
There might actually be a media player with video to download from the Web that would work. I’ve just begun to sleuth out apps for this thing…

The X-TC is definately a step up for Virgin Mobile. The phone has a really stylish look and feels great in your hand. Though the key-pad is a tad small, this device provides great sound and a pretty decent user interface.
This is the best phone you can get for $100 and it surely delivers.

Have had the X-tc for 4 weeks. Had Virgin Mobile send out two additional phones due to the Media Player not saving my 557 Mp3s to my 4Gb card. Each time the phone is powered down, I have to wait more than 12 minutes for the music to load. Compare to my Sandisk 4Gb clip with 440 Mp3s on it and a boot time of under 4 seconds.
Anyone else notice this behavoir? Kyocera says Virgin Mobile is responsibile for the phone’s software, but the Media Player’s splash screen says: Copyright Kyocera Wireless.

I have this phone, and I’ve had it for a month or so. I’ve tried and tried and tried to get music to load on its Media Player, but all of the attempts have failed. I have a SanDisk Adapter, and a 4Gb Micro SDHC card that has music on it, but when I load the card in the phone, it reads that there are no files or songs contained within it.
Help?

Has anyone figured out to load music to the X-tc? Cause I still cant do it HELP (please)

cperquin Says
To side load music on to your X-tc you need a MicroSD card. The X-tc has a slot on the side of it for MicroSD cards. A 4GB MicroSC card is the largest card the X-tc can support.
You use a PC to load the music on the the MicroSD card, and then you put the card into the slot on the side of your phone. You then use the music controls at the top of the X-tc to listen to the music.
MicroSD cards are very easy to find at places like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Target, Amazon.com, etc….
You can buy a headset at these places, too. I beleiive you need a headset with a 2.5 mm jack (the headsets for iPods and CD players are 3.5mm and won’t fit).

I’m having trouble getting musics on this phone. I have tried two different memory cards and both are SDHC but are different brands. One is 4GB and the other is 2GB, but neither of them work. I put music on the card and put it on the phone, but it keeps saying “no music found”. Anyone know what to do? I already tried formatting the card….

I have had my phone since 2010 during the summer. Been a year or more i have had it. Been a vm customer since i was in 8th grade and now im a junior. Good phone size and screen. The keyboard is small, but you get used to it. The camer is really bad. The kyocera loft is an upgrade to this phone but smaller in size. Non slide out qwerty keyboard. Still has a qwerty though. But i am enjoying the opera mini 5.1.. Faster and i can download free ringtones from there. (: love the google maps on this phone as well. Free to download on the vm mobile site from your phone browser.
