Virgin Mobile shows steady growth

Hi there! If you're new to the site, you may want to subscribe to the the feed.

There aren’t many prepaid companies whose subscriber data we know. That’s because most of them are private corporations. Yeah, we get results from the major carriers’ prepaid divisions, and then Leap and MetroPCS are public entities. So yeah, I still find it a bit strange to look at Virgin Mobile’s quarterly report. They didn’t fare badly, though, adding 210,000 customers during the fourth quarter. That accounts for roughly 40 percent of the 512,000 net customers Virgin added in 2007.

After five years of service, Virgin Mobile now boasts 5,085,886 subscribers.

“We are very pleased with our growth in Adjusted EBITDA for the full year 2007,” stated Dan Schulman, Chief Executive Officer, Virgin Mobile USA. “We believe that sustainable, disciplined customer acquisition will result in higher return on investment and growth over the long term.” Throughout the fourth quarter and holiday season, Virgin Mobile USA made the strategic decision not to participate in the practice of aggressive handset pricing at the $5.99 level. “Our experience tells us that this temporary, aggressive pricing can produce poor customer economics,” added Schulman. “Virgin Mobile has a strong, competitive offer and we are focused on building long-term value for our shareholders.”

Churn was up a tick, at 5.1 percent, though it’s not a significant increase. However, it has led to yet another quarter of loss, with the expected number to be between $3 and $6 million. They’ll make money one of these days…
