Virgin Mobile says screw the recession
posted by Joe on March 18th, 2009 - 10:00 am | Virgin Mobile
“In these tough economic times.” I’ve used that phrase many times in the past year, and better writers have used it even more frequently. Don’t expect it to stop any time soon, either. That doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything about it. Virgin Mobile, or more accurately Virgin Mobile Canada has launched a new website dedicated to everything recession. They aptly titled it Screw You Recession, though telling an economic movement to do anything seems a bit frivolous.
After looking through the site for a bit, I still had trouble figuring out what it was all about. Is it tips to get through the recession? If it is, it’s not an overarching theme. Is it snarking those who have money and continue to flaunt it? It’s a bit stronger a theme, but it’s still not the essence of the site.
We turn to Nathan Rosenberg, chief marketing officer at Virgin Mobile Canada, for his take (via TMCnet):
“Young people have told us that they’re feeling left out and are fed up with hearing about big corporate bail-outs. They’re looking for someone who’s got their back. We think it’s time everyone got some help on how they can take back control – and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
It’s not really taking control, though. Venting maybe, but there’s no element of control there. The only way to take control is to educate yourself on the actual issues. Venting is great, but in the end it accomplishes little beyond a temporary sigh of relief. Reading websites like Calculated Risk can actually help people understand what’s going on. That’s how you start taking control. Not by venting on a blog about how much the recession sucks.
