Verizon announces $80 smartphone — plan, with full-priced phone

When Verizon announced that it would release an $80 smartphone I thought it was $80 for the phone itself. As it turns out, Verizon meant that it was launching an $80 smartphone plan, to go along with a more expensive Android handset. Yesterday we got the full details on that. The $80 plan includes unlimited talk and text plus 1GB of data — meaning the 1GB of data is essentially a $30 upgrade to the $50 unlimited talk, text, and mobile web plan. Verizon also announced the availability of the Samsung Illusion with the plan. The 1GHz phone is a mid-range Android handset. It will cost $169.99. Both the Illusion and the new plan are available now. You can find them on Verizon’s website.
