You have to buy a Straight Talk phone, but you can port your Tracfone #. So, the answer to your question is, no, you can't use the Tracfone phone to start a Straight Talk account.

My squad leader used to always say: “If you’re gonna bitch about it, make sure you come up with a solution for it.”

I had the same frustrations with my ST phone… new phone was activated but didn’t work, old phone no longer had service, and I couldn’t use Skype to call ST customer service because you can’t push buttons using Skype to transfer to a live person.

Here’s what I did and I’m talking and texting on my new ST phone now. All you have to do to use your ST phone after you’ve activated it and your old phone has stopped working for at least 5 minutes, is dial *22890 on your new ST phone and follow the instructions. Oh, and it’s automated, no customer service rep to talk to.

This is not my solution, I found it here: http://saveonprepaidphones.com/porting_number_straight_talk

I bought my phone on a Thursday evening (last night) and went to bed an hour later. I woke up the next morning, spent about an hour bitching about my phone not working, and 30 minutes reading you guys’ bitches and gripes. Then I went on line and found this solution. Total time lost without phone service (not counting the time I slept): less than 3 hours.

Why in the world ST customer service does not know this, beats me. Why in the world the ST website does not have this important step in activating your phone posted somewhere clearly on their website, I don’t know. Their new customers could be talking within 10 minutes from purchasing a new phone instead of being frustrated and pissed off for 7 days or more from what I’ve read here.

Anyhoo.. check out the site and dial *22890 I’m already calling and texting :-)

I just bought a ST phone, but haven't activated it yet. I have been a Tracfone customer for well over 5 years now. I have even recommended Tracfone to other family members. All of us have been happy with their service. We primarily chose Tracfone because we don't use the cell phone a lot and the price was right. Yes, customer service could be better, but I have had just as many positive encounters with cs as I have negative. You all want your cake and eat it too. If you want to pay a reasonable price for cell service then you need to learn to live with some of the cons that go with a cheaper service. The only reason why I haven't activated my ST phone yet, is because I am trying to use up my Tracfone minutes before I port my #. I look forward to continuing my business with the Tracfone enterprise.

You guys are a trip! I have used straight talk for 6 months now and I have not had a single problem. Everything, including web browsing, works fantastic! There has to be some human error on some of your guys' ends or maybe some of you bought the cheap phone and are expecting it to be like a smartphone? I simply bought the best phone they have and even bought another for my wife. They are wonderful! TY ST!

"I have a tracphone thats already activated. Can I use it to switch over to there straight talk plan"

You can port your Tracfone # to a Straight Talk phone. You have to buy a Straight Talk branded phone with a Straight Talk 'plan'. Your current Tracfone minutes won't transfer, you'll lose them.
