Prepaid smartphone sales gaining steam

Tracfone adds a new low-end phone to its lineup. Another reason, though, is that prepaid carriers are simply carrying more smartphones. They’re making inroads, too. According to a research report from Stevenson Company, 29 percent of prepaid phone purchases in 2011 were smartphones. There’s still quite a gap between prepaid and postpaid smartphone sales, of course. Smartphones constituted 63 percent of all new postpaid phone purchases. We could see the gap continue to narrow this year, especially as we see cheaper and more functional Android handsets, particularly those that run on 4G LTE networks. In the meantime, here’s an interesting little prepaid vs. postpaid breakdown, from Stevenson Company’s report. Via GigaOm.]]>
