Box up your files for access anywhere
posted by Stuart on August 13th, 2007 - 10:00 am | Prepaid Services
An item appeared in our Inbox this morning which we found mildly interesting. We’re always discerning with items advertising products or services, though, since they’re mostly spam or scam. However, we were piqued enough to head to Box.net and check out their services. And we have to say, we’re at least mildly impressed with what they have to offer.
Once you sign up — for free — and log in, you have access to one gigabyte of storage space. You can use this to upload any type of file, which can then be accessed anywhere. This has a specific benefit to mobile, which we will get to in just one second.
You can also receive files from other Box users, as well as set up collaborative workgroups. If you’re the type that travels frequently but doesn’t have a laptop, this is an ideal service. It’s almost like mailing yourself important information, except your mailbox isn’t in a set place — it’s on the Internets, where you can nab it anywhere.
This is ideal for devices like the BlackBerry and the iPhone, which have limited internal storage space. By outsourcing all of your documents to Box, you can use that internal memory for cool things, like games and music.
If you need more than one GB, there are options for upgrades. Five gigs of storage space is $8 per month, and 15 gigs is $20. Both can be had at a discounted rate if you commit to a full year — which we wouldn’t, since this is a relatively new service. Still, it’s something you should check out if you’re having storage issues on your smartphone.
