As landline use decreases, wireless becomes “safe haven”
One trend you’ll continue hearing about for the next decade or so is the decline in use of landlines. Right now, 17 percent of homes are cell-only. Those are mostly of the younger crowd, who never had a landline through college, and see no reason to spend more money on one now. Metro PCS CEO Roger Linquist, speaking to a group of analysts, said that “wireless is a safe haven,” according to the AP.
The CEO considers wireless a good investment considering our current economic situation. He was speaking towards his company’s service, which offers unlimited calling for $40 per month. This means that customers can ditch their landline, leaving them with one phone bill instead of two.
As we see the price of unlimited calling plans come down — from the larger carriers, notably, not from already-cheap services like Metro and Cricket wireless — we’ll see an acceleration of landline disconnections. Why pay for two lines when you can talk all you want on your cell?
