Add another to the list of strange prepaid providers

We’ll be honest: we had never heard of H-E-B grocery stores until it had something to do with prepaid. That’s to be expected, we suppose, because we don’t live in Texas or Mexico, and those are only places where H-E-B exists. However, now that they’ve entered the prepaid game, our antennae have perked up.

H-E-B has teamed up with Austin-based Fusion Mobile to become their prepaid provider. That’s a nifty idea. Even niftier is that the phones and airtime cards are available right in the supermarket. “Lettuce, onions, chicken, cell phone…”

This isn’t some nuts and bolts offering, either. H-E-B is offering picture messaging, mobile web, and plenty of downloads. It looks like they’re in it for real. They’re even offering calls to Mexico for 2.5 to 5 cents per minute, which is remarkably lower than most other services.

Unfortunately, this does not bode well for Pocket Communications, who currently sell their phones and services in kiosks in the front of H-E-B stores. No official statement has been released on that issue from either H-E-B or Pocket, but if we were to guess, we’d say that relationship is tumbling down. Look for a severance if H-E-B expands significantly upon its already 1,000 subscribers.

I used to be an HEB mobile customer. It was very disappointing to me.First of all,the cheapest airtime card was $20 for only 90 minutes! And if you didn’t use them within 15 days, you would lose them. There is also a very small selection of phones.
So,after months of frustration,I switched to AT&T,which,so far,has been great!

Sounds very dodgy. I like the reliability of Straight Talk Prepaid at my local walmart. They offer the best deals in town with an Unlimited package for $45 monthly with Unlimited data, minutes and messages. Or $30 for 1000 minutes, messages and 30mb data. Straight Talk runs on Verizons network so they are reliable and coverage is great,
