Lycamobile Backtracking on Data Increase

Across the prepaid board, companies have been outdoing each other with data increases, both promotional and permanent. Data increases are awesome. Data decreases are not, especially less than a week after the initial announcement of what looked like a pretty sweet deal. Last week, you might recall reading that Lycamobile had amped up their prepaid data for plans priced $35, $45 and $55. It was posted all over their website, complete with a custom graphic, which we included in our story. The lowest price plan was quadrupled from 1 GB to 4 GB while the other two saw substantial price increases from 3 Gb to 6 GB, and from 5 GB to 8 GB, all with no price increase. It was awesome and really made Lycamobile seem far more competitive. But, apparently, it was not to be. Earlier today, Lycamobile removed the graphic from their website and decreased the high-speed data. According to Prepaid Phone News, Lycamobile customer service reps claimed that the initial announcement was ‘a mistake’ although how you can mistakenly change everything–including a graphic–on your site and leave it for five days is a little baffling. Currently, here’s what the changes look like:
Plan Original Data Old Promo Current Promo
$35 1 GB 4 GB 2 GB
$45 3 GB 6 GB 4 GB
$55 5 GB 8 GB 8 GB
I can’t say that $35 for 2 GB of data is anything to get super excited about, and neither is $45 for 4 GB of data–it’s ok, but not fantastic. I’m not really sure what exactly prompted this sudden change of heart or miscommunication, and I doubt we ever will. Probably a pretty bad move. I would assume that if someone took advantage of the previously advertised prices, you’ll be grandfathered at least for the cycle, but I’m not sure about that. Did anyone try it? Let me know in the comments!]]>
