Blyk takes service to next level with mobile content
posted by Joe on December 2nd, 2008 - 11:00 am | MVNO
Is free cell phone service possible? According to Blyk, the free UK MVNO, it is. We heard just a few months ago that they hit the 200,000 subscriber mark after just a year of being in service. That is double what they had forecasted. They’ve made their income stream known, and are now adding another level to it. The’ve announced a partnership with platform provider Velti which will deliver mobile content to its users beginning in January.
Velti and Blyk will use SMS and MMS as the “preferred format” for this content. This is the method by which Blyk delivers its advertisements, which help sustain the business. These messages will contain links to the service, so it essentially cuts down on mobile Web surfing.
This is just another development from Blyk that should increase their profitability. Clearly, they’re onto something with the service if they can sign up 200,000 people in a year. They’ve made all the right moves up to this point. If they’ve read the market right and their customers really do want this mobile content, they will see even bigger gains.
What we’re still wondering, of course, is how this can change the MVNO game in the U.S.
