Mobile video on the rise
As we see a wave of phones being released in time for the holidays, we can see a common denominator among them. Yes, we’re talking about mobile video. Nary a phone is released nowadays that can’t access streaming video. One might give pause and wonder why this is so, considering there were only a few million mobile video subscribers. The quick answer: Mobile video is going to grow astronomically over the next few years.
Sales of mobile phones with video capabilities are expected to rise from $58 billion in 2006 to over $125 billion in 2010. Considering the trends we’re seeing now, we wouldn’t be surprised if that ended up a conservative estimate. Phones are turning into pocket computers, meaning they’ll become more universally used for computer-type purposes. Like streaming video.
Another estimate we consider conservative is that there will be 58.6 million video subscribers in 2010. We think there will be more people using mobile video services, subscription or not (though we personally feel subscription is the way to go).
