MetroPCS working to keep up with increasing SMS traffic
It seems people are sending more and more text messages every year. This is a good thing for operators, since they can sell people on unlimited text messaging plans. That provides them with predictable income, something operators love. It also means they have to keep their networks in proper working order to handle the increased traffic. A story early last year that has continued, though to a lesser degree today, is of Boost Mobile having trouble delivering SMS. It appears MetroPCS doesn’t want to fall into that trap. It has implemented a messaging solution that should enable it to handle more SMS traffic, as well as a few other more advanced features.
Beware if you click the link above. It goes to a buzz word laden press release. The essence is that Metro has employed Mavenir Systems to better manage its SMS traffic. In addition to managing more SMS data, the platform should also make it easier for MetroPCS to handle “SMS Value Added Services,” which I believe translates to premium SMS services, and “Social Networks Aggregation.” Again, these seem to be buzz words that basically mean that you might see a few new features, but mostly that you’ll see a continued high level of service.
One interesting addition is the delivery of SMS and MMS to LTE devices. Metro has pledged its allegiance to LTE, and hopes to get something going later this year. LTE is mainly a data platform, and one of the challenges is routing voice and messaging over it. Most operators currently have different systems for voice/messaging and for data.
