MetroPCS rolls back gas prices
posted by Joe on April 4th, 2008 - 10:30 am | MetroPCS
I thought it was pretty cool when Boost Mobile gave away free gas in Hawaii to promote it’s newly-launched Boost Unlimited plan. Apparently, MetroPCS liked the idea, too. On Wednesday, they rolled prices back to $1.99 at a station near Brandon, Florida. No, it’s not quite free, but can you remember the last time gas was two bucks a gallon? (Winter/Spring 2006, is my guess.) Unlike the Boost promotion, this one ran in the afternoon, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
“We’re easing people’s minds and wallets,” MetroPCS spokeswoman Audra Wolf said.
I’m not sure how that eases people’s minds, considering gas was back up to it’s over-$3-per-gallon price after 5:30. Some people didn’t even think it was worth the extended wait to save a few dollars on gas. For instance, a woman who usually fills up her SUV for $60 saved about $20 with the promotion. For some, that’s not worth spending more than an hour in line — especially if your car normally fills for $30.
It’s a nice gesture for sure, and it certainly cost MetroPCS a pretty penny. Hopefully, it generated enough buzz for them that they gain a few customers.
