MetroPCS reduces savings on family plans
posted by Joe on August 6th, 2009 - 7:30 am | MetroPCS

It was nothing but good news two months ago when MetroPCS announced family plans. The process was simple: sign up for a $45 or higher plan, and add up to four additional lines, each of which would receive a $10 discount on the ticket price. So if you wanted the $40 plan, it would be $30 for a secondary line in a family plan. Metro recently improved the level of service on its plans, and apparently the family plan has suffered for it. As the graphic above indicates, the discount is now only $5 per line. It looks like I jumped the gun when saying that the new service levels would work well with the family plans. It looks like the service came at the cost of the family plans.

even though this new family plan seems like it’s jipping customers, it’s actually a more affordable family plan then what metro was offering prior. the difference is that with this new plan, all existing plans are $5 dollars cheaper (preferred unlimited is usually $45, now $40; unlimited local+long distance and call features usually $40, now $35; etc).
let’s say you wanted 4 lines: 2 with texting+pic messaging+internet, one with just texting, and one with just local+long distance+caller id.
with the old family plan it would break down like this:
$45 – primary line $0 disc. = $45
$45 – 2nd line $10 discount = $35
$43 – 3rd line $10 discount = $33
$40 – 4th line $10 discount = $40
Total = $153new plan:
$40 – primary $5 discount = $35
$40 – 2nd line $5 discount = $35
$38 – 3rd line $5 discount = $33
$35 – 4th line $5 discount = $30
Total = $133the new family plan offers the most savings!
next time, read the fine print

Don’t forget that the new plans are also tax inclusive! No hidden add-on charges when you pay your bill.
