MetroPCS preparing for deal
posted by Joe on September 14th, 2009 - 7:30 am | MetroPCS
As in 2007, we’re likely to hear a lot about a MetroPCS merger over the next month or so, with the most likely target being Leap Wireless. We’ve talked about it plenty already, and it seems like there’s a bit of news on the subject every day. The latest: MetroPCS has been in discussions with banks about strategic options. Yet this does not mean that the company is in talks with Leap over a merger deal. In fact, it’s pretty much spelled out that Metro is exploring all its options and not focusing on a deal with just one company.
From the sound of Reuters’s source, Metro could be looking to get serious.
“I know they’re talking to bankers. They’re interviewing bankers, trying to get advice from banks to help them to conduct a strategic deal,” the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Leap, of course, is not commenting.
This could just be posturing on the part of MetroPCS. If they want to make a deal with Leap and the latter isn’t biting, why not go out and explore your options? At the very least it’s a veiled threat that they could look elsewhere. Perhaps that brings Leap back to the table.
