MetroPCS live in Jacksonville, without AWS
posted by Joe on May 1st, 2008 - 10:00 am | MetroPCS
Word dropped this morning that unlimited carrier MetroPCS is available in Jacksonvile, Florida, starting today. This was actually announced back in January. The spectrum came via a purchase from PTA Communications. This gives them access to another 1.5 million customers, who will hopefully grow their already 4 million strong. This network, however, is not part of the 3G AWS spectrum that Metro will roll out throughout the year.
“Jacksonville is a key market for MetroPCS — it allows us to further expand our Florida service area and to serve this vibrant community,” said Tom Gawronski, vice president and general manager, for MetroPCS Northern Florida. “As a new member of this community, MetroPCS demonstrates its commitment to Jacksonville by offering consumers a new, more flexible and affordable option for unlimited wireless service. Our flat-rate, unlimited low cost service plans make it possible for consumers to cut the cord on their landline phone and have only one phone – their MetroPCS phone. We believe we will be the natural choice of wireless service for Jacksonville residents.”
Metro actually isn’t the first unlimited carrier to enter the Jacksonville area. Boost Unlimited has been there for a while now, and has an advantage over Metro: Sprint’s nationwide network. While basic services from both Metro and Boost only covers the subscriber’s local calling area, Boost does have an add-on feature which allows you to roam anywhere on the network, for an extra $5 per month.
