MetroPCS launches in Sin City

Hi there! If you're new to the site, you may want to subscribe to the the feed.

On the morning of the biggest wireless trade show in the nation, MetroPCS has announced that they will be offering service in Las Vegas — the very site of the convention. It will work on the AWS spectrum, which rival Cricket is planning to launch in Oklahoma City in the near future. So much for their quietness. The service is available now. I’ll be sure to talk to the guys from Metro during the week.

“Las Vegas is known for big prizefights, and we will have one in the wireless arena as Leap expects to launch service” in the city soon, Raymond James analyst Ric Prentiss noted. The city, which claims roughly 2 million people, will be the first major metropolitan area where MetroPCS and Cricket will go head-to-head; the carriers also compete in the California central valley cities of Modesto and Merced, Prentiss said.

Metro also announced two AWS handsets: The MyShot and Spex, which were announced by Cricket last week. They’ll be released sometime in April.

More on this, plus coverage of the convention, to come later today.
