You might recall that last week,
we reported that T-Mobile was planning on having the legacy CDMA network of its prepaid brand MetroPCS completely shut down by September, 2015. Well, it appears that T-Mobile is backpedaling and is instead going to turn off the network a wee bit sooner.
According to FierceWireless, T-Mobile will be shutting down MetroPCS’s CDMA network
as of June 21, 2015. All customers who have not switched to the GSM network run by T-Mobile will lose service on that date. According to T-Mobile’s first quarter report, there are around 500,000 customers still on the CDMA network, but nearly 92% of MetroPCS customers have made the switch.
For customers who still hava CDMA-based phone (meaning you have no SIM card in your device), MetroPCS is
offering credit to help offset the purchase of a new device. Depending on the device that customers have, MetroPCS will offer enough credit to purchase a similar or slightly upgraded handset. Handsets available include the Smasung Galaxy Light, LG Optimus F60 or the Samsung Galaxy Avant. In order to be eligible for the upgrade credit, customers must have the phone active through MetroPCS for at least 30 days.
