MetroPCS additions disappoint, but smartphones rising
posted by Joe on August 3rd, 2011 - 7:30 am | MetroPCS
The fallout from the MetroPCS second quarter earnings call didn’t go well. The stock took a substantial hit, which gives you about all the information you need about the quality of their numbers. But there is some good to be taken, even if the company’s additions were down about a third from the year-ago period. They added 199,000 subscribers, against 303,000 from the second quarter 2010. But the big news comes from smartphones, which accounted for 38 percent of all new handsets sold. The company apparently has 25 percent of its subscribers on smartphones, so there is definite room for growth. That could lead to greater earnings in the future, which could then lead to further expansion. Still, looking into carrier results in the second and third quarters always seems like a dicey proposition, moreso when the company is coming off a big previous year, as was MetroPCS. Their first and fourth quarter numbers will be much more telling.
