Rumor: Apple Pay Might Launch This Weekend

UPDATE: Apple has confirmed that the new 8.1 will support Apple Pay and that it will be available on October 20, 2014.   The days of lugging around a cumbersome wallet might soon be coming to an end, according to leaked reports and speculation amongst the tech community. The recently debuted Apple Pay program promises iPhone 6 users the ability to pay for purchases with information stored on their phones via NFC technology starting this October. Officially, the Apple Pay service is set to launch in “late October.” However, leaked memos from Walgreens indicate that it could be launched by the end of this week. The internal memo, discussed in this FierceWireless article, is meant for Walgreens managers to prepare them for accepting Apple Pay payments as soon as this weekend. Adding credibility to this rumor, Apple has scheduled a media event this Thursday in which they are expected to announce the new iPad (rumored to be a whopping 12 inches). With this media event, it wouldn’t strain the bounds of credulity that they might also discuss formal plans for Apple Pay or maybe even launch it with the event. Furthering the rumors, 9to5Mac recently wrote an article previewing Apple Pay and claiming from sources that Apple has released training materials to Apple employees and vendor employees alike. Be sure to check back, as I’ll update the site tomorrow with more solid facts after the Apple event.]]>
