How to Sync Email on Android Phones

One of the most common things that I get asked when someone is setting up a new phone is how to sync email accounts. Normally, this process isn’t super difficult, but there are multiple ways to sync emails and it’s easy to get confused. I’ll go over a couple different ways to sync your email accounts to your Android phone.

Through the Gmail App

If you use Gmail, then one of the easiest ways is to download the gmail app and use that instead of the native email app included on most Android phones. Some Android phones may come with this app preinstalled, while others will not. Whether you use the gmail app or the native email is really a matter of preference. Here are the steps:
  1. Download and launch the gmail app
  2. Sign in to your gmail account inside the app
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to set up any miscellaneous options
  4. Celebrate!

Through the Settings Menu (Add Account)

If you want to use the native email application instead of gmail, then you’ll need to use the settings menu. This process is slightly different on different models of Android, so use this as an approximation. However, for most older Androids (Kitkat or earlier) the process is always pretty similar.
  1. Open your “Settings” app
  2. Click on or scroll down to Accounts
  3. Look for something like “Add Account” or an email logo that you can click on to add account
  4. Put in your email account information
  5. Click “Save”
  6. Celebrate!

Through the Settings Menu (Email settings)

As with all things Android, there is always more than one way to do things. If you’re 100% sure you want to use the native email app and aren’t bothered with other accounts, then you can also use these steps:
  1. Open your “Settings menu”
  2. Click on “Email”
  3. Select “Account settings” and “Add Account”
  4. Select type of account
  5. Fill in your email information
  6. Click “Save” or “Next”
  7. Celebrate!
As a note, the email syncing process is vastly different for iPhones, so I’m sorry to say this isn’t going to help Apple fans much. Check back soon for a how-to on sycing emails on iPhones!]]>
