Cricket continues expansion into St. Louis
Expansion is ever-so important for regional cell companies. This is especially so for Leap Wireless, parent company of Cricket Communications, as they face the big carriers imitating their signature service. Cricket holds a competitive edge over the big carriers right now in terms of price and quantity of services for that price, but the big guys have national networks to back them up, which means no roaming. So while it might seem like a small deal that Cricket is now entering the St. Louis market, I think it’s a rather large deal for Leap.
This represents yet another market in which MetroPCS is not present. This serves Leap well from a competitive standpoint — be where your rivals aren’t — and from a merger standpoint. It’s hard to think about Leap and Metro right now without thinking that they almost have to band together.
If Leap is going to add over a million net customers this year, expansion is going to be key. They no longer provide a unique service, so now it’s a matter of getting their word out and being the best in more places.
A final point of note: Expanded services means more jobs. Yes, from the throes of competition comes a darling positive. Cricket is looking to hire about 100 people in the St. Louis area to do retail sales and manage accounts.
