Cricket announces yet another expansion
posted by Joe on January 4th, 2008 - 8:37 am | Cricket
Now that they’re out of the doghouse, Leap Wireless is back at their expanding ways. They’ve announced that Cricket, their flat-rate, unlimited calling provider, has expanded its network to Oklahoma City. The company had been serving the Tulsa area for some time, and has seen enough success to warrant expansion. They’ll be going live sometime in March, when they also plan to open five retail outlets in the area.
Cricket is the nation’s eighth largest cell carrier, serving 2.71 million customers in various regions throughout the nation. Their biggest competitor is MetroPCS, though the two companies don’t overlap much in their service areas. MetroPCS does not offer coverage in Oklahoma City. We’re still hoping this is an elaborate “divide and conquer” scheme between the two companies.
Cricket has recently expanded their network to include Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. Additionally, they’ve expanded their coverage in the Houston area.
“We go after a traditionally underserved segment of the population in that we have no contract, no credit check and no ID validation,” [Cricket's Oklahoma City director Jim] Rogers said. “We have a very easy entry process.”
We’re still disappointed that none of the unlimited carriers — Cricket, Metro, and Boost — are available in the Northeast.
