Everyone gets the first-date jitters. You sit there apprehensively, wondering not only what the other person is thinking, but what they’re like. Do they live with their mother? Do they have a steady job? Is he or she going to screw you over by the end of the night, or even at some point in the future? We’re human, so naturally we wonder all these things. New service PlayerBlock is the oracle for this. With it you can send a text and get the dirt on your date. It has to be the stupidest service we have ever heard of.

No one wants to get hurt. That’s for certain. So some people might welcome this service with open arms, saying that they’ll be able to find out quickly if this date will end well or not.

Did your date go well? Did you get played? Did they call when they said they would? We want to know! Tell us your innermost thoughts–don’t let your neighbors get fooled just as you did,” urges Global SMS, a privately owned company based in South Florida that came out with PlayerBlock.

See, sounds good to this point, right? Hopefully you answered “no” to that question. This is a terrible service. Are you seriously going to trust the opinion of someone you’ve never met — never even heard of — just because he or she dumped on your date?

Human relationships are a subjective experience. One guy might seem like a total sleeze to one woman, but might be Prince Charming for another. It’s how our minds work. So why are you going to let your mind, your thoughts, your emotions be dictated by some anonymous text messager? He or she could be out for cold-blooded revenge for all you know.

We feel bad for even reporting on this service. But we’d like to raise awareness of the issue so people don’t get trapped in it. Don’t listen to random people when it comes to your love life. Only you can decide who is right for you and who is not. Hell, we’d recommend shutting out your friends, too, when it comes to issues like this. We’ve had friends ruin at least a handful of what should have been fruitful relationships.

Go away, PlayerBlock, and mind your own damn business. Just because you can’t find a good date doesn’t mean we can’t.

We will show no restraint in expressing our love of Consumerist a Gawker Media blog that lashes out at companies that exploit consumers. We love them even more when they cover the telecommunications industry (we also show no restraint in expressing our detestation of the telecom industry). Over the past couple of days, they’ve had some great telecom content, and we’d like to share it with you.

First up is a piece from Mouseprint, in which the author goes over clauses in the AT&T contract. It’s kinda like we did with Verizon’s contract. A few points of note: AT&T can disconnect you if they find you’re using your cell phone as a modem, or if you’re using their “unlimited data” services too much. Sorry for taking “unlimited” too literally, AT&T. Our bad. Additionally, if you’re placing a call and the other line rings for more than 30 seconds, they start the minutes timer. This is actually better than Verizon, who appear to charge you when you hit the “SEND” button.

The next two pieces are intertwined. Editor Ben Popken ran an experiment where he typed “_____ is cool” into Google, where he replaced the “_____” with the name of a telecom company. Verizon and Helio tied for the most, with eight matching results. Sprint came in second with seven, then AT&T with five, T-Mobile with four (we’re surprised there aren’t more of those), and Alltel with a mere one.

The other one was the same experiment, except “is cool” was replaced with “sucks.” (Incidentally, have you ever Googled your name + sucks? It can be interesting). Sprint tops all with 31,000 results. AT&T had 22,500, and Verizon 20,000. It drops off from there. Notably, T-Mobile only returned 745 results.

The conclusion: There is none. It’s just a neat experiment to see what people say about these companies. We just wish AT&T and Verizon had fewer “cools” and a whole ton more “sucks.”

The mobile phone phenomenon is going strong globally. Every day we see news articles coming from India, China, Indonesia, Bulgaria, and a host of other countries that are adopting and adapting to life with cellular phones. Though we don’t read all of the articles, it’s nice to see that technology is spreading. We hope that it helps advance the economic states of the countries. Anyway, sometimes we get a good laugh out of the articles. Like today, when one Indian news outlet reported that sometimes when you think you hear your cell phone ring, it’s not really ringing. Welcome to our world, India.

Sometimes you think you hear your mobile phone ringing, but on checking it you release that you were just imagining it. Well, here is some assurance that you are NOT turning insane. A study conducted in the US has reported that this phenomenon is known as ‘ringxiety’.

It’s just so funny. They say that 67 percent of people suffer from this. From our experience, it’s 100 percent of cell phone users.

Survey and scientific results aside, it’s part psychological, part physical. Yes, the anticipation of your phone ringing is causing you to think it’s ringing. The physical part is that the muscles near your phone actually twitch at some points, which cause many to think their phone is ringing.

The way we combat it: We keep reminding ourselves that our phone vibrates much more violently than the muscle twitches we’re feeling. Yeah, we often check our pockets during these minor twitches, but it’s getting better.

It’s nice to know that this goes on in other parts of the world, and that people are just as amused at the phenomenon as we were when we first started using a cell phone.

File under: Things we wish we had when we were in high school. We can only imagine our friends’ reactions if this had existed back in the day. It looks like a plain, innocent cell phone — a Nokia or Motorola, perhaps. But then WHAM, you jab it into someone’s chest and fill them with 900,000 volts of electricity. It also has a 12 LED flashlight, so you can positively ID your victim before sending him trembling to the ground. Like the folks at Gizmodo, we see this being used for more harm than good — that flashlight comes in pretty handy when you’re sifting through someone’s pockets, trying to find their wallet.

Seriously, what the hell? Do we really need a cell phone for dogs? Well, PetsMobility thinks so, as they have introduced PetCell, “a revolutionary waterproof GPS cell phone for your pet.” We really wish this was a joke, but apparently it’s not.

Even the paragraph from their website is beyond ridiculous:

Now you can call your pet anytime, just to say hi, or to get off the couch. The collarset will auto answer only the telephone numbers you pre-program, filtering out any unwanted callers.

Well, that leaves us with peace of mind. We wouldn’t want those delinquents down the street prank calling Cujo. Damn kids.

The GPS thing we understand. Losing a pet can be an ordeal, but a GPS collar would make the tracking and finding process much easier. That we’re on board with. The phone? Well, we have but one thing to say to that:

YOUR PET CANNOT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH!

Sorry if that seems obvious to you. It does to us, but apparently does not to those at PetsMobility.

They do offer a feature that allows anyone finding the pet to call the owner just by pushing the — get this — “Call Owner” button. However, if the thing is GPS-enabled, such a feature shouldn’t be necessary. The owners should be right on the pet’s trail.

There is no price listed on the website. However, Switched claims that the device costs $500 — or, in case you’re interested, MORE THAN AN iPHONE!

People make us sick sometimes.

People, given the proper resources and time, really can build anything. Take this new motion sensor, for example. Using just an old GSM phone, it can detect motion and then send an SMS message to selected numbers, alerting them of possible trouble. Your prepaid GSM phone is perfect for this…except that it has to be active, meaning you’re still paying for the service — though it would probably be much cheaper than an alarm service if you chose the right GSM service provider.

Yeah, we didn’t know this existed either, nor did we actually believe it at first. It appears that there’s an event called the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship. Yes, the name implies the contest. Strangely enough, it was the 8th annual event, making us wonder how the hell we hadn’t heard of it earlier. It took place over the weekend, with tommi Huotari winning the men’s division with a throw of 89.62 meters. Eija Laakso took the women’s for the second year in a row, recording a toss of 44.49 meters. We’re totally going next year — and practicing.

Planning a heist, but don’t know how to get around those pesky security cameras? A solution can be found within your mobile phone. That is, if you hook up a kickass laser to it. All you have to do is mount the laser, hook it up to your phone, and send yourself a text message. Then you activate the “laser,” and boom — no more surveillance. Also useful for stopping those pesky neighbors who spy on you — and probably less illegal that way, too.

* Prepaid Reviews does not condone you planning a heist or committing any kind of crime. We’re just playing around. Figured we’d clear that up before you go rob a bank.

In explaining why he was late to a very important debate, Senator John McCain explained that he was the victim of bus delays, citing a missed transfer, departure delay, and a flat tire. He wound up being 50 minutes late for the event. “I would’ve called, but I was out of minutes on my prepaid cell phone,” said McCain. So there, you go: political entities use prepaid, too*.

* This is coming from The Onion, so you know it’s just satire. Just thought we’d make that clear, so none of you think we’re dunderheads.
