AT&T’s GoPhone advertising more acceptable this year

Last year at this time, I was a bit miffed at some of AT&T’s advertising practices for Go Phone. As you can see in the screenshot that follows, they claimed unlimited talk and unlimited text front and center, while only making the true claim in the fine print. Yes, you can talk for as long as you want, as long as it’s to an AT&T customer. This year, however, things look a bit different.

Finding the best phone from each prepaid carrier

Can you get a quality, feature-rich phone on prepaid? How about for a good price? It used to be that you either had to settle for a five-year-old phone, a refurbished model, or pay out the wazoo for a prepaid cell phone. Last week, though, we saw a deal on AT&T Go Phone: the Sony Ericsson Z750 for $39.99. With a $25 airtime card included, the net cost to the consumer is $14.99. A quick glance at the features — music player, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth — shows that this is a stupendous value for the dollar. Today, we’ll take a look at some of our pay as you go cell phone providers to see the best deals they offer on phones.

Motorola i776 headed for Boost Mobile

While the information is sparse, what you see above is the Motorola i776 from Boost Mobile, soon to be available through Target. While it will surely be carried elsewhere, it looks like Target’s the one that slipped up and leaked the info early. Honestly, I saw this at Phone News a couple of days ago, and I’m surprised as hell it hasn’t been taken down yet.

Virgin Mobile Canada picks up LG Rumor

While Telus and Bell are going to charge for incoming text message, it appears that Virgin Mobile Canada has no such plans. In fact, they’re even releasing a device which is pretty awesome for texting. It’s the LG Rumor, a phone that’s been around for a while, yet certainly serves its purpose. While it does feature Bluetooth and a 1.3 megapixel camera, the slide-out QWERTY keyboard is the main focus of this phone. Prepaid customers might have to shell out a few bucks for this one: $199.99 to be specific. You can knock it down to $79.99 with a three-year plan…but who wants to do that? Pic after the jump.

Virgin Mobile: More consolidation in cell market

Virgin Mobile is very concerned about the current U.S. economic condition. It’s having a direct effect on their customer base, which is low and middle income families and individuals. So you know they’re keeping up with the goings on. The bad news is that they’re not figuring things to get any better for at least another year. The good news is that they’re planning measures to make the company stronger in this time. And maybe these measures will have some beneficial long-term effects for consumers.

Additions down, churn up at Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile released their quarterly report yesterday, and let’s just say that as far as subscriber numbers go, it wasn’t all that pretty. They did report earnings of $0.07 per share, so that’s a positive. At least that’s what CEO Dan Schulman is telling us. But, as fans of the consumer side of the business, we’re more interested in the subscriber data. So let’s see where Virgin Mobile fell short of last year.

Cricket announces AWS for Las Vegas

We knew that Cricket would be rolling out their AWS 3G network throughout this year. The first market was Oklahoma City, which was announced on the eve of the CTIA convention. Next up, Las Vegas, which is set to go on May 13.
