If you have a prepaid cell phone that is ringtone-capable, you can download ringtones to it just as you would with a standard mobile service. Some prepaid service providers offer the option of purchasing custom ringtones as part of your calling plan. When that is the case, the company’s website may offer files for preview and download.

Many prepaid carriers require up-front, credit-card payment for each download, rather than adding a charge to your phone bill. Your service agreement or guide/manual may state whether that is the case.

How to Download a Ringtone To Your Prepaid Phone

You can find a number of sources online for downloading ringtones to your prepaid phone, each with a wide selection and pricing options. Check out the encyclopedia of ringtone sites for a comprehensive list. If you don’t have time to read the entire list, here is a shortlist of subscription and pay-per-download sites:

StreetTunes
Visit: www.streetunes.com
StreetTunes is a subscription service that allows 12 downloads for $9.99 per month, and their realtones and polytones categories are organized by genre: Alternative, Animal Sounds, Astral Tones, Baladas, Boleros, Broadway, Childrens, Christian, Christmas, Classical, Colombian Regional, Country, Dance, Egyptian Frog, Electronica, Folk, Fun Sounds, Funny Characters, Gospel, Hard Rock, Hip Hop, Holiday, Jazz, Latin, Metal, New & Hot, Pop, Punk, R&B, Rancheras, Rap, Reggae, School Tones, Sertanejo, Soundtracks, Special Effects, Top Hits, Unknown, Valentines, and World Music.

Snazzie
Visit: www.snazzie.com
Snazzie.com is another $9.99 per month subscription service, specifically for finding ringtones for Nextel mobile phones.
SendMe Mobile
Visit: www.sendmemobile.com
SendMe Mobile has a one of the largest libraries of ringtones featuring your favorite stars and characters, organized into twenty-two categories like Pop, Hip Hop, Latin and fight song ringtones. You can also search by carriers including T-Mobile ringtones, Verizon, Sprint, Boost, Cellular One and AT&T.

Transferring Ringtones To Prepaid Phones That Are Not Internet-Capable

One of the following methods may help you transfer ringtones to your prepaid phone if it is not internet-capable. These steps depend on your phone‚ model and/or computer’s capabilities, so they may require some trial and error.

Many .mp3 or .mid files can be emailed directly to the cell phone and saved as a ringtone.

You may be able to insert the phone’s SIM card into another internet-capable phone temporarily, download the desired ringtones, then place the card back into your phone.

If your phone model includes the required Bluetooth files, you may be able to pair it with another person’s phone locally and transfer ringtone files via Bluetooth.

If you’re using Media Manager software to transfer ringtone files from your computer, while copying a file to the phone’s ringtone folder, be sure to select the “advanced” option, and set it to 44 Hz and 128 Kbps. (The desired setting may differ according to phone model; check your particular model’s instructions to be sure.)

Ringtone File Formats

Your phone’s manual should include info on your particular model’s readable ringtone file format(s). If you are interested in converting existing sound files to a format that your phone can use, it can be tricky business! Here’s info on some of the formats currently in use:

AAC: Many newer model phones like the iPhone and Sony Ericsson W810i support the “.m4a” AAC file format. In addition to the .m4a file format, the iPhone also supports the m4r format. The “.m4r” format is exactly the same as the “.m4a” format aside from having an “r” rather than an “a” in the extension.

iMelody: New phones not using Nokia‚ Smart Message regularly use this format.

KWS: The ringer format specifically for Kyocera phones.

MID / MIDI: This is a common and popular ringtone sound format.

MP3: The mp3 format is a very common on music players like iPods and Zunes. Many phones today also support ring tones that are mp3 format.

Nokia / SCKL / OTT: Nokia Smart Messaging format. Many phones in addition to Nokia can also receive ring tones as a text message. Using ring tone tools to create these text messages eliminates the need for a data cable and allows anyone with a Nokia Smart Messaging format compatible phone to load their own ring tones.

PDB: Palm database. Many PDA phones, like the Keyocera 6035 and the Handspring Treo, use this file format.

PMD: co-created by Qualcomm and Japanese company Faith, this format can include a variety of different features like static graphics, animation, text, vibration and LED events, in addition to MIDI and sampled audio.

QCP: this is the file format generated by the Purevoice software from Qualcomm.

RTTTL: A popular ring tone text format.

RTX: Similar to RTTTL with some advanced features, like different octaves that are not available with RTX format.

SMAF: Yamaha music format that combines MIDI with instrument sound data (aka Module files). Filenames have the extension “MMF”.

“Create-Ringtone” for Windows and “Ringtone Converter” for Mac are examples of software that you can use to convert and add new ringtones to your mobile phone. Or, whenever you would like to turn your existing music and photo files into custom ringtones and graphics without having to purchase any software, Mobile17.com is a great place to do so online.

You know, I never understood the appeal of ringback tones. Maybe it’s because they were introduced when I was too old to care. I did enjoy music ringtones for a period (Wolfmother’s “Woman” was my song of choice), but even that novelty died rather fast — to the point where I cringe when I hear crappy-quality music blaring from someone’s cell phone speaker. Ringback tones are a totally new ballgame, though. The only person that hears it is the person calling you. So basically you’re dropping money for the enjoyment of others. That might be considered a “nice” act, but I think it’s kind of wasteful. But since it’s so damn popular, it appears my opinion counts for squat. Anyway, Virgin introduced these a few months ago, and they’ve become a huge hit on their network.

Reports are that 100,000 Virgin subscribers currently use ringbacks. And not only that, they average two ringbacks each. And you know there are people with jukeboxes out there who are bringing up that average.

“We always look to provide our customers with rich content and choice, allowing them to create their own mobile identities,” said Wes Radez, director of mobile content for Virgin Mobile USA. “More and more consumers are looking for ways to add their own style into the many ways they communicate, and Ringback Tones are something our customers appreciate.”

Most popular among Virgin Mobile customers are Ringback Tones in the hip-hop and R&B categories. Some of the top Ringback Tone titles selected by Virgin Mobile customers are: “Shawty Is A 10″ (The Dream); “Bed” (J. Holiday); “Heaven Sent” (Keyshia Cole); “Crank That – Tell ‘Em/Ne-Yo Chorus (Soulja Boy); and “Apologize,” (by OneRepublic featuring Timbaland).

I’m actually more on board with their featured Black History Month and Old School Rap songs, which include a few by guitar god Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Ice Cube, and Eric B. and Rakim.

(Side note. Saw Rakim live late last year. He was beyond incredible. Might be the best emcee in terms of smoothness of his rhymes I’ve ever heard.)

Ringback tones will cost you $1.99 a pop. You can nab them at Virgin Mobile’s website.

As I said last week on Going Cellular, if AT&T does it, you can bet Verizon is going to. This time, it’s the best selling ringtones, which AT&T announced right before the holidays. Verizon’s list is out now, so let’s check it out after the jump.

“A Bay Bay” by Hurricane Chris
“Beautiful Girls (Main Chorus)” by Sean Kingston
“Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” by T-Pain
“Crank That (Soulja Boy)” by Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em
“Glamorous” by Fergie
“Party Like A Rock Star” by Shop Boyz
“Rockstar” by Nickelback
“Stronger” by Kanye West
“The Way I Live” by Baby Boy Da Prince
“This Is Why I’m Hot (Chrous)” by MIMS

Like AT&T’s list, I’m not too familiar with these. Of course, I know “This Is Why I’m Hot,” because it’s the theme music of the best player in baseball, Alex Rodriguez (Go A-Rod!). Makes you feel kinda old, you know?

Anyway, a few of the names are overlaps with the AT&T list, but it appears that Verizon and AT&T customers have slightly different tastes in music. Verizon also released their top ringback and full-track songs. So, ringbacks:

“Apologize” by Timberland
“Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston
“Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie
“Buy U A Drank” by T-Pain
“Crank That” by Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em
“Glamorous” by Fergie
“No One” by Alicia Keys
“Party Like A Rock Star” by Shop Boyz
“Rockstar” by Nickelback
“This Is Why I’m Hot” by MIMS

Not much variation there. We’re only going to list the top full songs that don’t appear on either list:

“Cyclone” by Baby Bash
“Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s
“Kiss Kiss” by Chris Brown
“Umbrella” by Rihanna

It seems everyone loves ringtones. Everywhere we go, we hear some song or another — though sometimes the sound quality is so poor we can’t make out which one. It’s to the point where we’ve been noticing in our user reviews that some people won’t sign up for a service based solely on the fact that they don’t offer a library of ringtones. AT&T, America’s most popular cell carrier, has announced the most downloaded ringtones of 2007.

“Ringtones continue to be one of the most popular entertainment features on wireless devices, whether they’re hip-hop, alternative, classic rock, pop, Latin, country or even holiday tunes,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Data for AT&T’s wireless unit. “AT&T offers an industry-leading catalog with tens of thousands of ringtones, and we add hundreds more to our portfolio each week.”

For what it’s worth, we hardly ever hear classic rock. We’d love, though, to hear someone use Ritchie Blackmore’s solo in “Highway Star” as a ringtone.

Anyway, the list:

1. Shop Boyz – “Party Like a Rockstar”
2. Mims – “This Is Why I’m Hot”
3. Soulja Boy – “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”
4. Nickelback – “Rockstar”
5. Akon – “Don’t Matter”
6. T-Pain – “Buy You A Drank (Shawty Snappin)”
7. Hurricane Chris – “A Bay Bay”
8. Sean Kingston – “Beautiful Girls”
9. Huey – “Pop, Lock & Drop It”
10. Fergie – “Big Girls Don’t Cry”

(We feel old for not knowing who eight of these 10 artists are.)

AT&T is offering a few holiday ringtones for free through the season — but we’d recommend against it. You wouldn’t wan to get punched or anything.

Is there anything Google doesn’t do? Well, until recently, they had little invested in the mobile world. Then we heard of their play at the wireless spectrum auction. Now the news is that they’re about to enter the mobile content industry. Which makes perfect sense, since they’re in just about every other technological industry. Like many of their endeavors, the power of their search will power their mobile content plan.

The idea is to aid consumers in finding all of their mobile content via search. If someone wants to find, say, a Van Halen ringtone, they would just use Google’s mobile search to find a list of places they can find Van Halen ringtones. If they want to find a copy of Tetris, they can search and sort through the billiondy places you can find a copy of the popular puzzle game.

After proving this model is successful, Google would then take a note from its ad program and charge websites for higher placement for certain keywords in search. However, everything isn’t all smiles and sunshine:

The company has been working for months with content providers — including large entertainment companies and smaller mobile-media aggregators — to index their material and make it available via mobile search. But the project has been marred by a series of technical delays, people familiar with the matter say, illustrating that there’s a learning curve as Internet giants adjust to the peculiarities of the mobile world. It isn’t clear how soon Google plans to launch the service.

Another snag: they’re going to have to work with or around major carriers like Verizon and AT&T. Surely, those companies won’t be too pleased that Google is trying to steal some of their marketplace, and may make it tough on them. However, Google could initiate a move that would allow transactions to pass through the major carriers’ storefronts, thereby being an affiliate-like program. Still, with all the fighting over the spectrum auction, we don’t see these companies working together in the near future.

There are also rumors of Google starting a social networking kind of site where users can exchange content. This would be run through their popular Gmail platform. Google has issued no confirmation on this, but it makes sense. It wouldn’t cost them much, and the benefits could be far-reaching.

It seems Google is popping up everywhere in the news nowadays. We’re absolutely looking out for them to start their own mobile network; their recent dealings with major carriers make it unlikely they’d start an MVNO.

You’ve got your brand spankin’ new prepaid service up and running. You’ve activated it and added airtime. So what’s next? Download some sweet ringtones, that’s what. Your ringtone says a lot about you, so picking the right one is a tough decision. You’ll need a wide selection.

So you head to your provider’s website to see what they have available there, but it’s nothing notable. Or, worse yet, maybe your provider doesn’t even have a ringtone download service. So what, are you stuck with the built-in ringtones?

Of course not.

The Internet is filled with sites offering ringtone downloads — possibly too many. In fact, googling “ringtones” has become a futile act. There is so much crap to sift through that you’ll never find what you’re looking for (don’t even bother with the sponsored sites or the advertisements on the side, unless you enjoy pop-ups and pages that have little, if anything, to do with your search). Don’t fret, though.

We’ve trawled the Internets and have come up with the most comprehensive directory of ringtone sites available for prepaid subscribers. We’ll separate it into sites for free ringtones (which always carry paid premium content, too), paid services (most of which are subscription-based), and software for you to create your own ringtones.

In order to download these ringtones, your phone must have an internet connection (WAP). Back in the day, sites could send a SMS message to your phone containing a ringtone, but that was for monotones and small polyphonic tones. In the age of realtones (i.e., MP3 tones), it’s not that simple. Unfortunately, many providers don’t offer internet connections. Check with your provider to see if you’re eligible.

A quick note: as with any service you sign up for, make sure you check the terms and conditions before you register. Apparently, some of these sites can charge you via your service provider (we learned this lesson when browsing through Cellfish). You wouldn’t want to get a bill at the end of the month for something you thought was free. Make sure to check out your provider’s policy on WAP usage as well.

Also, make sure to also read the privacy policy. The last thing you want is to be receiving telemarketing calls on your cell ($$).

Free/Pay Per Download

Most sites that offer free ringtone downloads also have a premium catalog. The ringtones in the premium category are usually pay-per-download. Not a bad deal if you’re on the hunt for a timeless song. Not exactly ideal if you change your ringtone weekly. However, they’re a dying breed.

Cellfish. There is a selection of free and premium songs on Cellfish, most of which is user-provided. Members can upload 20-second ringtones, full songs, videos, images and more, all of which is available for you to download. It uses a credit-based system, so you only pay for the premium content that you use.

Ringtone Evolution. These guys offer the gamut: full songs, 20-second ringtones, games, wallpaper, and more.

Subscription Sites

If you change your ringtone on a regular basis, joining a subscription site may be the best plan for you. Pay per month and receive a certain number of downloads. Check out the list and see which one best fits your musical needs.

PlayPhone. This is a hybrid pay-per-download/subscription site. You pay a subscription price of $9.99 per month, which gives you 14 download credits (20 for the first month). Each song has a different credit value, so you may only get three downloads per month if you’re using the most premium ringtones.

SendMeMobile. This is another hybrid site with subscription and pay-per-download options. Pay $9.99 per month for 10 credits and SendMe Mobile will give you another 10 bonus credits. So, 20 credits per month or $2.99 – $4.99 per download Similar to Flycell, songs have different credit amounts.

Streetunes. Another hybrid pay-per-download/subscription site. They offer six downloads for $5.99 per month, or 12 downloads for $9.99 per month.

RingRingMobile. It costs $9.99 per month — but that’s really all the information they give you. We’ll be honest: we weren’t about to enter our number into this one. Nothing was specified beyond the price. If you can’t find what you want elsewhere, maybe this is worth a shot. Buyer beware.

Flycell. For $9.99 per month, you get 20 download credits. Each song has a different value, though we’re not sure how it’s determined. Featured songs on the main page — new songs — are 4 credits. However, “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” by Whitesnake is 6 credits. What ever happened to supply and demand? Tracks are also available on a pay-per-download basis, ranging from $2.99 to $4.99 per song.

<http:>Blue Frog Mobile. Despite the name, it is not a mobile service provider. It does provide access to its ringtone catalog for $9.99 per month. This covers 10 downloads, which can include ringtones or wallpapers.</http:>

<http:>GetPhoneTones. Another one where you pay $9.99 per month and get 10 credits (though it’s unclear what one credit can get you). Unfortunately, unless you activate an account (which means paying them), you can’t see the catalog.</http:>

Unlimited Subscription Sites

For the attention-deficient among us, unlimited subscription sites may be the cure. They offer a flat rate for unlimited downloads. So you can have a different ringtone for everyone in your phonebook — and change it every day, if you want — and pay the same price, no matter what.

Unlimited Ringtones. This subscription site runs from $1.99 weekly to $9.99 monthly, depending on the level of service you want. There is plenty to choose from: full songs, 20-second ringtones, polyphonic ringtones, wallpapers, and more.

RingOPhone. This subscrption-based site offers either six-month ($3.30 per month) or 12-month ($2.50 per month) plans. Thousands of ringtones can be found here, as well as wallpaper and other graphics.

FreeRingers. Get unlimited access to their catalog of nearly 2,000 ringtones for just $7.99 per year. Wallpaper and even those silly polyphonic tones are also available.

Community Sites

Myspace has taken social networking to the next level. Everyone’s trying to jump on the bandwagon, including ringtone sites. Really, it is an ideal forum to create and share ringtones. Create your own, upload it, and share it with everyone.

FunForMobile. This site is just fine if you already have software on your computer that will make your audio files into ringtones (if you don’t, there are some listed below). Unfortunately, there is no song editor on-site.

Phonezoo. This is another community-based ringtone site. Users can use the on-site software to create ringtones from their own audio files and upload them to the site. From there, other users can browse and use them. Best part: it’s free.

Myxer Tones. This community site stands out because it reaches out to independent artists and allows them to sell (or give away) their songs as ringtones and paintings as wallpaper. You can also create an download your own songs and wallpaper (free), or choose from Myxer’s premium catalog. Note: apparently, even though artists can charge for their ringtones, Myxer reserves the right to give them away for free. Just sayin’.

Mobile17. The only thing that makes this site really stand out is that they make everything as easy as possible. They swear they won’t spam you or give out your info — just one more reason to always read the privacy policy.

Zedge. This community site adds a voice maker tool, allowing you to create nutty voice tones, or to add voice to your existing tracks. A very flexible ringtone creator helps, too.

Software

Plenty of small, simple programs have popped up that allow you to take songs from your computer and create ringtones. What could be easier? Instead of searching the Internet endlessly for your favorite song, you can take it right from your computer.

Ringtone Ripper. As simple as it gets. Download the software, follow the instructions to make your favorite song a ringtone, and download it to your phone. You don’t even need another service to get moving with this one. Oh, and it’s free.

Ringtone Media Studio. This is very popular ringtone creation software. Just $29,95 makes it yours.

Create-Ringtone. A very user-friendly program available for just $19.95. You can give it a whirl for free, too.

DJ ToneXpress. In addition to the ringtone creator, his comes with free plug-ins to create wallpaper, as well as a program that compresses full songs into a format playable on cell phones, and a program that allows you to send mass text messages for free.

A few years ago, using actual songs for ringtones was a feature reserved only for the most privileged cell phone user. The rest of us were stuck with “polyphonic” ringtones, which amounted to nothing more than a crappy MIDI song that no one could really recognize, anyway. Now, though, even the phones you get free with a two-year contract can play MP3 snippets as ringtones. Best of all, they are made readily available not only through service providers, but at roughly 18,000 Internet sites.

This is considered a boon for the record industry, which is making a fair share of dough from ringtone sales. Unfortunately, it is a bane for most average people: we are now subjected to a wide array of crappy music blaring from cell phone speakers. The worst part is that even some good or even great songs simply cannot translate well to a ringtone.

What can we do, though, to let people know that their ringtone is crappy? Being blunt about it will only raise contempt in the crappy ringtone bearer. Well, we can do what everyone else does to illustrate a point: make a list! While it could probably go on forever, here is a shortlist of 19 songs you should never use as a ringtone. Are you a guilty party?

1. “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston

The first aspect of ringtones that needs to be understood is that cell phone speakers are unfailingly crappy. That may change in the next few years, but for now we’re stuck with something just above the level of your PC speaker (no, not the Bose set you got with your computer, the one that is built into the machine. Yes, they still have those). Therefore, songs with extremely high- and low-range vocals or instruments simply sound terrible. Just imagine hearing Whitney’s “and iiiiiiiiiiii-eee-iiiiiiiiiiii will always love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu” emanating from your cell phone five times a day. Okay, so now that you’ve imagined it, you’ll never download it, right?

2. “Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani

Look, Gwen already saved the world from illiteracy when this song came out in 2005 by teaching us all how to spell “bananas.” There is no need to keep reminding us of her Hooked on Phonics lesson. Plus, she was definitely better when she was just a girl than as a hollaback girl. No Doubt ringtones are certainly acceptable.

3. “Thong Song” by Sisqo

This one isn’t a problem for most people, as there is a pretty universal recognition that the novelty of “Thong Song” wore off long ago (like, a week after it came out). However, this song is perfect for those “ironic guys” lurking among us. If they’ll sing outdated karaoke songs tongue-in-cheek, they’ll surely use such songs as ringtones. Which is a shame, since this song is terrible even by ironic guy standards. How about some rockin’ irony, like “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll To You” by Kiss?

Others that fall into this “terrible, even to the ironic guy” category: “Backstreet’s Back” (aren’t the ironic guys in this home video enough proof?) by the Backstreet Boys, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and “Rico Suave” by Gerardo. Especially “Rico Suave.”

4. “Fur Elise” by Beethoven

Why do people use classical music as a ringtone? Do they think it makes them sound sophisticated and classy? “Fur Elise” makes the list because it is the most grossly overused, but there are plenty of other offenders, like “Canon in D.” As a rule, no classical music should ever be used to signify that your phone is ringing. Except “Ride of the Valkyries.” That song is kickass!

5. “Face Down Ass Up” by 2 Live Crew

Hey, maybe face down and ass up is the way you like to get it on. But does that mean you have to proclaim it to everyone within a hundred-foot radius? This represents perhaps the biggest problem with ringtones: everyone hears them, and most don’t want to. So yeah, songs like this needn’t be played to a crowd of total strangers.

Yes yes, there is an article in the Bill of Rights that guarantees us free speech. Does that mean we have to go out and abuse it? There is such thing as tact and courtesy. Then again, ringtones in general violate those virtues.

6. “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

We all know this song rocks; we also know that it is heavily overplayed. In fact, it may be the most overplayed song in the history of songs. Classic rock and mixed rock radio stations have it in their rotations, TV shows and commercials use it, each and every one of your friends has it on his or her iPod, it’s in every jukebox in every bar in America, and you can’t go to a summer social gathering without hearing it. Is it really necessary to have it indicate that you’re receiving an incoming call? Perhaps the better question is, how many times can you hear it before you’re declared clinically insane? Those who employ “Sweet Home Alabama” as their ringtone may soon find out.

7. “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by Wang Chung

Many people would scoff at this notion. “That song is awesome,” they’ll say. That may be true, but it in no way means that it would make a good ringtone. You may get a favorable reaction when it goes off for the first time, but just watch people’s reactions thereafter. It will go from “haha, killer song!” to “heh, Wang Chung” to “dude, you need a new ringtone.”

But if you must, by all means, go ahead, especially if your motto is “no regrets.” That, and “everybody Wang Chung tonight.”

8. “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey

Much love has been bestowed upon this song recently. Between the 2005 World Series champion Chicago White Sox, Family Guy, and Laguna Beach, we hear this song now more than when it was released in 1981. Does it make a good ringtone, though? Absolutely not. Steve Perry may rock, but no one should want to hear his howling voice when their phone rings. Leave the Journey in your car (where you sing along at the top of your lungs — we know you do).

9. “Final Countdown” by Europe

Commonly played as an anthem at sports arenas, “Final Countdown” gained a further cult following when it appeared as Gob’s theme on the TV show Arrested Development. Problem is, it’s not one of those songs that you can hear ad nauseum and still think it’s cool; the synthesizer is rather taxing on the ears. A few Arrested Development fans may rock out with you the first couple of times (because there are certainly no Europe fans), but even they’ll be sick of it by the end of the day.

10. “Rockstar” by Nickelback

Let’s face it: Nickelback sucks. How they continue to get radio play is beyond all human comprehension; it’s surely part of some vast Canadian conspiracy. Go so far as to make this song your ringtone, though, and risk having someone lob your phone into oncoming traffic. I guess Chad Kroeger’s insidious voice incites that in people. This can really be the rule for any Nickelback song, though. After all, their songs all sound the same.

11. “Glamorous” by Fergie

First, she ruined Black Eyed Peas. Then, she offended America’s ears with “London Bridge” (though “My Humps” was nearly as bad). But the former Kids Incorporated star keeps pumping out music and climbing the charts. You may enjoy her music, but ask yourself this question before downloading her as a ringtone: aren’t you better off just waiting until she releases another single in two weeks?

12. “Because I Got High” by Afroman

There is a definite similarity between the Afroman song and actually smoking marijuana: both, done in moderation, could be highly enjoyable. Unfortunately, when a song plays over your cell phone speaker multiple times per day, it is called excess, and this kind of excess ruins a fringe-good song like “Because I Got High.”

Plus, do you really want to go around announcing that you smoke pot? “Look at me, I smoke pot, I’m so cool.” Real potheads don’t make it public information, you poseur.

13. “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC

This is the quintessential example of a great song that doesn’t translate well into a ringtone. First, it suffers from “Sweet Home Alabama” syndrome, described above. Second, Brian Johnson’s high-pitch squealing can be likened to that of Steve Perry or Whitney Houston, at least for cell phone speaker purposes. Third, since ringtones are only 20 to 30 seconds long, you probably have the chorus play when your phone rings, which is the most boring part of the song. You can slightly mitigate this wrong by going with the guitar solo, which absofreakinlutely rocks.

14. The theme from Mission: Impossible

If Tom Cruise compels you to set this as your ring tone (if not Peter Graves), fine, so be it. Be forewarned that you will annoy everyone around you when a call comes in. However, if you do insist on choosing this as your ringtone, please spare us your “secret agent” antics. No one wants to see you creeping around a corner sporting a finger pistol. Worst of all, the song may even inspire others to do the same, and the last thing we need in the world is mass idiocy.

15. “Fuck tha Police” by NWA

Here’s the thing: the theme of this song is the prejudice against and oppression of inner-city black males. Yet, NWA’s target demographic is middle- and upper-class suburban white males. And, fittingly, they are the ones who most frequently employ this song as a ringtone. First off, it sounds ridiculous coming from a preppy white kid (but the song still rocks). Second, it’s along the same lines as “Face Down Ass Up.” The people around you don’t need to hear Eazy-E decrying cops.

16. “All Along the Watchtower” by Bob Dylan

The Jimi Hendrix cover of this gem usually comes to mind first, and it would make a fine ringtone. There are some Dylan purists out there, though, that would actually consider the original to be better. While that’s not necessarily wrong, it sure doesn’t translate to a usable ringtone. It’s not exactly his voice that makes it unbearable, though that doesn’t mitigate the song much. Rather, it’s the harmonica. A formula to keep in mind: harmonica + cell phone speaker = tonal atrocity.

17. “The End” by The Doors

There’s a rumor that some fraternities lock their pledges in a basement for six hours and play “The End” on a continuous loop. Surely that sounds like torture, and the same should be considered for this song as a ringtone. Jim Morrison may have been a poet (or thought he was a poet, depending on who you’re talking to), but his lyrical musings can be put to much better use. You know what would make good Doors ringtones? “Break on Through” or “LA Woman.” Really, anything but “The End.” Hell, does it even count as a song?

18. “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen

What’s wrong with Bohemian Rhapsody, you ask? Absolutely nothing. It is certainly one of the most impeccably written songs in rock history. The problem is that it is most commonly associated with a scene in Wayne’s World. You know which one I’m talking about: five guys squeezed into a tiny car, pantomiming the operatic build-up and headbanging during the heavy part. Great song, great scene. Unfortunately, everyone has seen that movie, hence everyone makes that association. The result is a sea of headbangers whenever this song is played. It’s cool the first couple of times, but gets really annoying after that. After four or five calls, it can become real painful to the neck.

19. “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin

No Stairway? Denied! There are roughly 18,000 excellent Led Zeppelin songs. Why choose the one that is so overdone that it has been banned from being played at a handful of guitar shops? Stick with something like “Moby Dick” or “Immigrant Song,” and leave Stairway to the amateur guitarists who still think it’s cool to play. No one needs to hear the song more than they already do.
