It’s not often that we see an MVNO that offers international roaming capabilities. Page Plus, however, is an exception. They recently announced an international roaming program that covers Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Calls to Mexico and Bermuda will cost $1.10 per minute, and calls to Puerto Rico, Canada, and the Virgin Islands will be 60 cents per minute. Text messages in any of those areas are 25 cents to receive, 50 cents to send.

Great news from a Page Plus dealer, posting on Howard Forums. The Page Plus $10 card, which previous provided 83 minutes (10 cents per minute), will soon provide 100 minutes, reducing the cost to 10 cents. That’s great news for light users. It appears the change will take place on November 16, and Page Plus dealers will get new cards reflecting the change. The old 83 minute cards will also load up for 100 minutes starting on the 16th. In further good news, phones that come with a pre-loaded $6 in airtime will now provide 60 minutes instead of 50 to reflect this recent change.

Starting next week, Page Plus will adopt a few policy changes (via Howard Forums). These are seemingly minor alterations to current policy, but Page Plus believes that these will “help reduce confusion, streamline and simplify these processes for the dealer, and reduce the amount of call volume to our customer service center regarding these issues.” The changes include a change in activation and port-in credits, plus the abolition of balance minimums for ESN and MDN changes.

The only downside to the service is a reduction in the activation credit. Previously, Page Plus would add $12 to an account upon activation, but starting on October 19 that will be $6. There will also be a $6 credit when you port your number from another carrier. Also, the $10 minimum balance requirement for changing an ESN or MDN has been lifted. This is the part that will reduce confusion — there was no fee to change the ESN or MDN, but Page Plus required a minimum balance in order to perform the change. I assume the abolition of the minimum relates to the introduction of unlimited plans.

Again, these changes will go into effect on Monday, October 19.

Page Plus introduced a new Talk n Text plan yesterday, Talk n Text 1200. For $29.95 per month customers get 1,200 voice minutes, 1,200 text and multimedia messages, and 50 megabytes of data. The plan is a compliment to Page Plus’s unlimited Talk n Text plan, which includes unlimited minutes, unlimited messages, and 20 megabytes of data for $39.95 per month. It will be available on October 9th at Page Plus’s website and at retail locations.

Earlier this year Straight Talk launched service with two plans. The first included 1,000 minutes, 1,000 messages, 30MB of data, and unlimited 411 for $30 per month. The second includes unlimited voice and messages, plus 30MB of data and unlimited 411 calls, for $45 per month. After Straight Talk made its debut, Page Plus upgraded its Talk n Text plan to unlimited voice, messages, and 20MB of data for $40 per month, undercutting Straight Talk by $5. This new plan offers more minutes, messages, and data than Straight Talk for the same price. Both Page Plus and Straight Talk operate on the Verizon Wireless network.

If you look at the user reviews of our pay as you go cell phone providers, you’ll see a common theme: poor customer service. There seems to be one exception, though. While Page Plus has its downsides, it gets more favorable customer service mentions than any other carrier. The service has gained in popularity lately, partly because of this, and partly because of the increasing attention they’ve been getting because of their cheap plans. User tobikay on Howard Forums complains that he’s not even able to get through to customer service, though. So what gives? It appears Page Plus is aware of the problem, and they will hire 100 more employees, mostly customer service reps, before the end of the year.

While hiring 100 wouldn’t be a big deal for a big carrier, it’s quite a leap for Page Plus, which currently only employs 145 people. These new hires will work from the company’s Springfield, Ohio headquarters.

The company does understand the strains it is putting on its existing customers. “I’ve got people waiting in the queue 90 deep right now,” says Joanna Crosser, human resources manager at Page Plus. The new employees will help get those lines to a manageable level.

If you live in the area, you can go to www.pagepluscellular.com/careers.aspx to check on new openings

Like MetroPCS and Cricket, Page Plus Cellular is improving on its plans, rather than introducing completely new pricing tiers. Instead of lowering prices on certain plans, Cricket and Metro added more features to their current plans, giving customers more for the same amount of money. Page Plus first did this with their Unlimited Talk n Text plan, which originally provided 1,500 minutes plus 1,500 texts for $39.95 per month. Earlier this month they upgraded that to unlimited voice and text. For many, it wasn’t a big difference — do unlimited customers really use more than the 1,500 minutes and texts? In any case, they made another upgrade this week, this time for text messaging.

It wasn’t long ago that Page Plus added texting bundles, $10.95 for 2,000 messages, and $19.95 for 5,000. Again, 5,000 isn’t technically unlimited, but it’s more than your average user will go through in a month. For many it was just as good as unlimited, with a few outliers still going over the insane allotment. To fulfill that minority desire*, Page Plus has introduced an unlimited texting bundle for $19.95. For many, this will mean nothing, but because it’s at the same price point as the 5,000 message bundle, it won’t mean a downgrade for existing users.

* While it does fulfill the minority desire, this might also be a marketing ploy for Page Plus. With so many other services offering unlimited text messaging, it makes sense that they would follow suit, rather than putting a concrete number, no matter how large, on the plan.

This will go well with Page Plus’s pay-as-you-go offerings. Of course, if you get the unlimited Talk n Text option you won’t need this. But for those who talk more than they text, this might be one of the best deals in the business.

We heard the rumblings of a new Page Plus plan about a month ago, and now it’s finally official. The company announced its Unlimited Talk n Text plan today, offering unlimited voice minutes, unlimited text messaging, and 20 megabytes of data for $39.95 per month. Who said there’s not going to be a price war? The offering from Page Plus comes in $5 cheaper than Straight Talk, which is $5 cheaper than Boost Unlimited.

Of course, the downgrades in price also have some downgrades in service. Straight Talk, for instance, caps Web usage at 30MB, while Boost allows for unlimited browsing. Page Plus brings down that cap to 20MB, though to say that the extra 10MB is worth $5 is a bit of a stretch. Straight Talk does allow unlimited directory assistance, which is a plus for them.

It seems like $40 is the new target price for unlimited services. Boost made it $50, but with Straight Talk lowering the bar to $45, and then MetroPCS and Cricket wireless improving their $40 offers, that might be the new competition point. Page Plus and Boost do have one major advantage over Leap and Metro: a nationwide network. That’s one thing that could push Page Plus over the top.

It seems everyone in the cellular industry wants an app store. Apple started it with the iPhone, and it caught on so well that others are popping up everywhere. BlackBerry has launched one for its line of smartphones, and Verizon is gearing up for its own. Next on the list is a carrier you might not expect: Page Plus. They just announced their own app store, which is available on BREW-capable Page Plus phones. The best part about that is that you can use your Verizon phone, which is likely to be BREW-compatible, on the Page Plus service.

Because Page Plus typically does not host smartphones, this app store likely won’t be as extensive as those from Apple and BlackBerry, but it’s still a plus for Page Plus customers. They can download ringtones, wallpaper, games, and more. There’s also word in the press release about streaming video.

Page Plus seems to be making a push for more subscribers. In addition to their attractive Talk n Text plans, they recently added texting bundles. We’ve also heard (though it’s unconfirmed) that they will offer new plans starting in August, including an unlimited plan. While many MVNOs crumbled a few years ago, Page Plus has continued to stand out.n

There is absolutely, positively no first-hand confirmation of this, so please take it with a grain of salt. A few posters on Howard Forums have heard that Page Plus will launch a new plan, or new plans, on August 1. Again, this is not confirmed. The rumor is that it will be an all-in unlimited plan, much like the recent wave we’ve seen from Boost Mobile and Straight Talk. We’ll obviously follow this one until we get official word — or don’t get official word, depending on whether this rumor has legs.

Page Plus has made a number of improvements to its service offerings this year. Among the more prominent have been the addition of BREW content and the Talk n Text plans. Now we’ve got word about two new service enhancements. First is the introduction of text messaging bundles. For $10.95 per month subscribers can grab 2,000 text messages, and for $19.95 they can get 5,000. Unless you’re an insane texter, 5,000 should be more than enough. Perhaps the limit is there so Page Plus can avoid some of these monstrous text messagers who take advantage of unlimited plans.

It sounds like this is a monthly plan, where the messages renew every 30 days. One thing I had hoped when I saw the limits on the messages was that these would be stackable — i.e., that you could just outright buy 5,000 messages and have them last as long as you need. Alas, it sounds like they’re just a per-month thing, and that you’ll have to buy a new bundle once the 30 days is up. Overages, if there are any, will be billed at the normal SMS rate.

Additionally, according to this Howard Forums thread, Page Plus is working on a limited market test for a $1.99 per day unlimited plan. They currently have one for $2.49, but it could come down 50 cents nationwide soon. The test markets will be in Ohio, Michigan, Florida, California, and Texas. This is cheaper than a number of unlimited plans, but still not quite to the $50 of Boost/MetroPCS/Cricket/Virgin, but it’s something. No word on when it will go nationwide, but if you live in one of the current markets make sure to check out the deal at your Page Plus retailer.
