Telus not happy with “gaming” of spectrum auction

Back before the Canadian spectrum auction began, I remember reading someone who wasn’t pleased with the new entrant rules. He claimed that such rules would amount to leaving money on the table — which I guess implies that the big companies would pay more for the spectrum than the new entrants. $4 billion later, the Canadian government has a nice little haul. Telus is not happy about this. They feel the overall design led to overbidding, according to The Canadian Press. Could Telus just be a bit better about their haul?

“Unfortunately, we got a dysfunctional result because of a flaw in the design,” chief financial officer Robert McFarlane told an telecom conference Tuesday.

“You could have new entrants but not had the gaming that occurred.”

Not that Telus didn’t get what they wanted. It just sounds like they think they paid a little too much for it.
