Get out of your Canadian cell contract with no ETF

Hi there! If you're new to the site, you may want to subscribe to the the feed.

No one likes early termination fees. Yet, when you need to sign up for a three-year agreement in order to get the best subsidy on a cellular phone, you sometimes have little recourse. But what if you become dissatisfied with your service? Well, you’ll be paying ETFs of up to $700 per phone line. However, you might find a reprieve in CellPlanDepot.com. They’re offering a service that will allow you to post the remaining term of your contract online, to see if anyone else would like to take it off your hands.

“With the launch of new wireless technology such as Apple’s iphone there is no question that people want the freedom to switch carriers as they please.
If you’re moving, have a corporate plan, found a better plan or are simply dissatisfied with your cell phone company, you can turn to our service for a solution” says Shane Theriault, founder of www.CellPlanDepot.com.

This works for people wanting to shed their commitment to a particular cell company. They can post online, and see if there are any takers. And so it also benefits people who want cell service, but don’t want the full term of agreement. Phones can even be swapped in a deal, and the participants can negotiate their own terms of transfer.

Because this saves on costs to the consumer, it clearly cuts into carrier profits. We’ll see how long it takes the major Canadian players — Telus, Rogers, and Bell — to try and strike down this service.
