Boost Unlimited off to a good start

Olga Kharif of BusinessWeek caught up with Boost Mobile President Matt Carter, who talked to her about the new Boost Unlimited plan. His quote on the overall response over the first two weeks: “We’ve been very pleased.” One would imagine that a $50/month unlimited calling, messaging, and Web plan would attract a number of subscribers, but where are those subscribers coming from?

One issue noted from the beginning has been the potential of Boost Unlimited to cut into Sprint’s Simply Everything plans. They both offer unlimited voice and data — though Sprint’s data is a much more comprehensive offering — but Boost’s is half the price. Carter says they haven’t seen such an effect so far. In fact, they’ve seen “plenty of postpaid subscribers” switching to the plan from T-Mobile.

With T-Mobile adding more prepaid than postpaid subscribers, their overall numbers could take a big hit if their postpaid subscribers are headed to Boost. They’re still the fourth largest carrier in the nation by a wide margin, and if they are really bleeding customers to Boost, they could be in some trouble in the months ahead.
