GoPhone continues to tout unlimited service
posted by Joe on April 10th, 2008 - 7:29 am | AT&T
Back in December, AT&T GoPhone ran some ads which I thought were pretty misleading. They kept talking about unlimited talk and unlimited text, but in reality GoPhone is not unlimited. If you pay a dollar per day, yeah, it’s unlimited to other AT&T customers. But there’s no mention of that. Even in this press release I got today — talking about a new advertising campaign featuring Meatloaf and Tiffany — there is no mention of the conditions under which their “unlimited” plan is limited.
“GoPhone is changing the conversation about wireless by giving customers control over how much and how often they pay for their wireless service — and they still get access to AT&T’s exclusive content, devices and features,” said Judy Cavalieri, AT&T vice president of Prepaid. “The new advertising illustrates these features in a fun, entertaining way to which all viewers can relate.”
I can see everyone relating to Meatloaf. After all, everyone knows “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.” But Tiffany? I have a feeling fewer people in the younger generations have a connection with her.
But that takes me away from the more important point. Control over how much and how often you pay for your wireless service? That’s only a little misleading. Yeah, if you choose not to use your phone on certain days, and you choose to only talk to other AT&T customers, yeah, you’ll have some semblance of control over your bill. But when you’re talking to AT&T customers, you’re paying $1 per day. And when you’re talking to non-AT&T customers, you’re paying 10 cents a minute.
Pretty cheezy, eh?
But remember, when you’re buying a GoPhone, it’s only unlimited sometimes.
