AT&T posts best ever subscriber gains

The rich just get richer. Yes, America’s No. 1 cell provider just wrapped up a stellar fourth quarter. As we headed into the holiday season, more and more people chose AT&T. Probably because of the iPhone. In any event, AT&T added 2.7 million customers in the fourth quarter. This is the greatest quarterly subscriber increase in U.S. wireless history. They added 2.4 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of last year.
Postpaid adds reportedly total 1.2 million. So does that mean they added 1.5 million prepaid customers? It’s a tough number to swallow, but they did have an aggressive ad campaign for GoPhone, so they likely added many in that realm.
And then you have the Dobson acquisition, completed mid-November, which brought AT&T another 1.7 million customers. So this brings AT&T’s grand total to 70.1 million subscribers, clearly still tops among U.S. carriers, barring a coup by Verizon, which I don’t see happening.
Gross subscribers totaled six million. This accounts for the 1.7 percent churn rate, which is always among the best in the industry. Sprint, please take note of this number.
Also of note is the 57.5 increase in mobile data revenue over the fourth quarter 2006. This number, though, figures to continue rising for quite some time now, as more and more people realize the conveniences of having the Internet everywhere.
